Keep Your Groove On: Mastering Movement in the Summertime Hustle

Summer comes with it’s own unique challenges. How can we best keep up with our pilates / yoga/ movement practice & not loose the progress we’ve gained so we can continue to reach our goals.

The summer season is in full swing, and we know you're all revved up for some epic travels. As the season unfolds, many of us find ourselves embarking on exciting journeys and adventures. However, with the busyness of travel and change in routine, it can be challenging to maintain our beloved movement practices. I get it—finding the time and space for your practice on the go can be a challenge. But fret not! In this edition, I've got your back with some tips, tricks, and ideas to help you rock your movement games during your summer adventures. Let's dive right in!

1. Stay Consistent, Stay Awesome

Consistency is your secret weapon, my friend! Even with (or especially with) a hectic schedule, aim to make movement a daily habit. Promise yourself to squeeze in some movement time each day. Just 15-30 minutes of mindful practice will do the trick to keep your body active and maintain your progress. Remember, small and steady steps will keep you on the path to success. Consistency is more important than intensity, especially when you're away from your regular routine.

2. Explore Local Studios and Pop-Up Classes

Ready to infuse your travels with some local flavor? One of the joys of travel is discovering new places and experiences.  Seek out nearby studios or look for pop-up classes in your destinations.  Dive into the vibrant movement scenes of the area. Most studios offer drop-in classes or short-term memberships, letting you soak up the vibes of the local community while staying true to your practice. Exploring different styles and connecting with fellow practitioners can be refreshing and inspiring.

3. Take Your Practice Outdoors

The summer months offer fantastic opportunities to take your practice outdoors. Find parks, gardens, or rooftop terraces, or beaches where you can unroll your mat and soak up some sunshine. Breathing in fresh air, feeling the grass beneath your toes, or the breeze on your skin adds an extra dose of magic to your practice. Just remember to stay hydrated and protect yourself from the sun's rays.

4. Pack a Portable Practice Kit

Who says you can't bring your practice on the road? Carrying a compact, travel-friendly movement kit ensures you can practice wherever you go. Invest in a travel-friendly, foldable mat, snag a resistance band that rolls up smaller than a sushi roll, grab a small or inflatable ball. Pop 'em in your suitcase or carry-on, and boom! You're all set to transform any space into your personal fitness sanctuary. Transform anywhere into a sanctuary for flowing, stretching, and strengthening.

5. Tech Up Your Travel Game

The future is now, so take advantage of it! Whip out your phone, tablet, or laptop and unleash the power of online classes, tutorials, and mobile apps. There are plenty of places to find classes and ideas. Check out Lotus Movement online courses or on demand classes or sign up for a personal home practice delivering you your daily movement routines to follow along with. All these resources provide flexibility, allowing you to practice at any time and adapt to your travel schedule. Take advantage of these virtual resources to keep your practice alive wherever your adventures take you.

6. Embrace Movement Snacks!

If time is tight, fear not! Embrace the power of mini-sessions throughout the day to keep your movement mojo alive. Snatch a few moments in the morning to stretch and wake up your body. Sneak in a quick Pilates core workout during lunch break or before dinner. And don't forget to wind down with a relaxing yoga pose or two before calling it a day. These bite-sized sessions will keep you feeling strong, centered, and keep you connected to your goals and maintaining your progress.

7. Ask an Expert

Don’t be shy to ask for help and get a jumpstart. Book a session to focus on a home / travel practice you can take with you. Book online sessions while on the road. Most teachers now days do both in person and online sessions. Have a custom home / travel program created for you in the Lotus Movement app with routines delivered to you that you can follow along with. There are so many options now to keep the consistency, accountability, and personal attention of working with an instructor.

8. Embrace Play

Try some new activities that feel fun and exciting! Embrace a new hobby that helps to fit movement into your week. Try a dance class, kick ball league, aerial or acrobat class. Go paddle boarding or kayaking.  Its summer keep it light and fun!

9. Stay Mindful and Listen to Your Body

Remember to listen to your body and adjust your practice accordingly, especially when traveling. Travel can throw some curveballs your way, from jet lag to different climates and environments. Be mindful of any sensations of fatigue or discomfort, and modify your practice accordingly. Embrace variations and modifications to keep your practice safe, enjoyable, and in alignment with your needs.

As you embark on your summer adventures, remember that movement is not just about ticking off goals—it's about finding joy, balance, and self-care on the journey. Embrace the spirit of exploration and let your practice be your trusty travel companion, supporting you as you explore new horizons.

Wishing you an incredible summer filled with breathtaking travels and amazing experiences!
